Fish advisory issued for Lake Wylie

Fish advisory issued for Lake Wylie

LAKE WYLIE, NC (WBTV) - The N.C. Division of Public Health has issued a fish consumption advisory for largemouth bass caught in Lake Wylie, located in Gaston and Mecklenburg counties.

Elevated levels of PCBs have been found in largemouth bass caught in Lake Wylie. In addition, previous studies have shown that largemouth bass in all waters of North Carolina have elevated levels of mercury. As a result, the N.C. Division of Public Health (NCDPH) is issuing a fish consumption advisory for Lake Wylie.

Women of childbearing age (15 to 44 years), pregnant women, nursing mothers, and children under age 15 should not eat any largemouth bass caught in Lake Wylie. To guard against mercury exposure and PCB exposure, NCDPH recommends that all other people should not eat more than two meals a month of largemouth bass from Lake Wylie.

Adult, youth dove hunts to be held at Draper Wildlife Management Area

YORK COUNTY - Applications are due August 12 for an opening day (September 3, 2011) adult dove hunt and youth dove hunt at Draper Wildlife Management Area in York County.

Public drawings will be held to select participants for the opening day dove hunts at the Draper Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in York County. This year on opening day, a special youth dove hunt will be held in addition to the regular public dove hunt at Draper WMA. Dove season opens this year on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011.

Like last year, the number of hunters on opening day will again be limited at this popular dove field near Historic Brattonsville. "This is being done entirely because of safety concerns," said Jeff Witt, DNR unit wildlife biologist.

Fish with 'human-like' teeth found in Lake Wylie

LAKE WYLIE, SC (WBTV) - A fishing trip on Lake Wylie went a little differently than one Clover man planned when the fish he caught bit him with human-like teeth.

Frank Yarborough went fishing along Lake Wylie on September 6th and ended up with a catch that is puzzling local marine biologists.

Yarborough thought he'd caught a catfish near the Buster Boyd Bridge, but when he scooped his hand in the water to pull it out, the fish clamped down on his thumb. The bite stung, because the fish had teeth that very closely resemble human teeth.
