Fish advisory issued for Lake Wylie

Fish advisory issued for Lake Wylie

LAKE WYLIE, NC (WBTV) - The N.C. Division of Public Health has issued a fish consumption advisory for largemouth bass caught in Lake Wylie, located in Gaston and Mecklenburg counties.

Elevated levels of PCBs have been found in largemouth bass caught in Lake Wylie. In addition, previous studies have shown that largemouth bass in all waters of North Carolina have elevated levels of mercury. As a result, the N.C. Division of Public Health (NCDPH) is issuing a fish consumption advisory for Lake Wylie.

Women of childbearing age (15 to 44 years), pregnant women, nursing mothers, and children under age 15 should not eat any largemouth bass caught in Lake Wylie. To guard against mercury exposure and PCB exposure, NCDPH recommends that all other people should not eat more than two meals a month of largemouth bass from Lake Wylie.

Know someone doing good for the environment? Nominate them!

The State of South Carolina’s top honor for stewardship of the natural world will be awarded again soon and sponsoring agencies are putting out a call for nominations.

The Environmental Awareness Award recognizes South Carolinians who are doing extraordinary work on behalf of our environment.  Nominations will be accepted through December 31, 2011.

Each year the public is invited to submit nominations to the awards committee.  This committee is made up of representatives from the state’s natural resource agencies, including the South Carolina Forestry Commission, the Department of Health and Environmental Control, the Department of Natural Resources, and the S.C. Sea Grant Consortium.

(Carolina Thread Trail) - The Carolina Thread Trail Governing Board has approved trail grant applications from 13 community projects along The Thread totaling $689,240.

Trail implementation grants are awarded by the Board to provide catalytic funding to communities to assist with trail corridor design, land acquisition and construction.

“We are pleased by the enthusiasm of our communities to implement their segments of The Thread,” said Philip Blumenthal, chair of the Carolina Thread Trail Governing Board.  “These catalytic grants will result in more trails, contributing to the betterment of our region’s health and quality of life.”

SC tree planters have 2 more weeks to get “first pick” of seedlings

SC tree planters have 2 more weeks to get “first pick” of seedlings

SOUTH CAROLINA - Annual seedling sales have been brisk in anticipation of tree planting season, which traditionally begins on Dec. 1st.  The Forestry Commission remains a key provider of forest tree seedlings to those South Carolinians aiming to reforest their lands.  But beginning October 1st, our seedling sales will open up to out-of-state buyers.

Remaining in-state customers should get their orders in to the Commission within the next two weeks while their chances of getting the stock they want are higher. So far, we’ve sold about 61% of our seedling crop, all to in-state customers.  The Commission’s nursery still has a good supply of both hardwood and softwood tree seedlings available.

The Commission’s Taylor Nursery grows 33 varieties of trees for sale including pines, hardwoods, and Christmas tree species.  Taylor Nursery is one of the state’s leading providers of hardwood seedlings and containerized longleaf pine seedlings.  This year, we’re growing almost two-million longleaf seedlings.  They are expected to be in high demand so orders should be placed as soon as possible.
