Proposed water hike

TEGA CAY - Some Tega Cay residents are doing all they can to keep from getting soaked by a proposed water rate increase.

George Tolson likes his lawn well kept but he could run into a flood of problems if a proposed 21.8% water rate increase is allowed to take effect.

Tolson and many other residents packed the Glennon Center Wednesday night during a public meeting about the increase.

Tega Cay Water Service Incorporated, an independent company, has filed an application for the rate hike but residents and the city are fighting it.

They all say, based on the current economic situation, now is not the time to raise water rates.

"In the winter, I average about $80 a month. In the summer it can go as high as $120 to $130 a month," said George Tolson.

The proposed water fee increase will affect only homeowners living in the historical section of Tega Cay.

City officials will present a formal testimony in opposition to the proposed water rate increase at hearing in Columbia on June 7th.
